Applications open for Volunteer Grants 2013

March 28, 2013

Chris Hayes MP, Federal Member for Fowler is urging local organisations and community groups to apply for the Volunteer Grants, open now until the 24th of April.

"Our volunteers do an amazing job and this grant, in addition to assisting them with completing their job, is a way of saying ‘thank you’", Mr Hayes said.

Eligible organisations can apply for funding between $1,000 and $5,000 to assist with costs such as; hire and purchase of small equipment, volunteers fuel cost, transport of volunteers with disability and training and background checks for volunteers.

Last year 4, 800 community organisations and 166, 000 volunteers across Australia benefited from Volunteer grants. This includes 10 organisations from our local area.

"Organisations such as Autism Advisory and Support Services in Liverpool, depending entirely on the hard work of dedicated volunteers, will greatly benefit from the $3,500 grant", Mr Hayes added.

Another local organisation receiving Volunteer Grant funding is KK Obilic Incorporated, a club providing locals with the opportunity to play social and competitive basketball, who received $1, 800 to go towards volunteer petrol costs.

Obilic President Stevan Sipka stated the grant was extremely helpful to the club and made it easier to ask a volunteer to give up their free time to coach.

"With the funds provided the club has purchased an excellent BBQ which is now the focal point of all our activities. We have also dedicated the remaining funds to assist our coaches with petrol money to partially offset some of their personal costs".

"I would like to thank the Federal Government for its support of grass root community sport", Mr Sipka said.

"I urge all local organisations and community group who depend on the tireless efforts of volunteers to apply for the Volunteer grant. I am happy to provide assistance with the application process", Mr Hayes said.
