The Turkish community in Fowler will enjoy a new shaded courtyard at the Bonnyrigg Turkish Islamic Association, thanks to the Rudd Labor Government’s Building Multicultural Communities Program.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Senator Kate Lundy and the Member for Fowler Chris Hayes today announced that the Bonnyrigg Turkish Islamic Association will receive over $130,000 to install a new roof over their courtyard.

This grant forms part of the Rudd Government’s $15 million Building Multicultural Communities Program which will strengthen social cohesion and promote inclusions in diverse communities.

"Australia’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths and that is why the Rudd Labor Government is proud to support organisations that promote cohesion and inclusiveness," Senator Lundy said.

"The Bonnyrigg Turkish Islamic Association does a great job in celebrating diversity and promoting harmony in our local area. This grant will assist the Association in continuing to do this important work as well as serving the local Turkish community", Mr Hayes said.

The Bonnyrigg Turkish Islamic Association will receive funding under Stream 2 of the Building Multicultural Communities Program which provides grants of up to $150,000 to community organisations to enhance their existing facilities, to improve community access, and to promote and foster social inclusion.

Stream 1 of the Building Multicultural Communities program provides grants between $1,000 and $10,000 to help organisations purchase a range of equipment, such as computers, furniture and sporting goods.

Funding for this project is already included in the budget.
