Federal Member for Fowler, Chris Hayes, expressed his deep sympathy over the devastating floods sweeping through Serbia and neighbouring Bosnia and Croatia.

"I express my sincere sympathy over the dreadful natural disaster currently occurring in Serbia and neighbouring Bosnia and Croatia. I am particularly saddened by the tragic loss of life and would like to send my condolences to the families left behind.

"Many Australian Serbs live in my electorate of Fowler which boasts one of the largest Serbian communities in Australia and I am aware many local residents have relatives and loved ones directly affected by this disaster.

"I visited Serbia early last year and it was clear the country was still in a process of rebuilding after years of struggle and conflict.

"Disasters of this magnitude are difficult even for the most developed countries to handle, and it is great to see a united Serbia and a united region coming together in a most astonishing way.

"I have been in contact with local community representatives who are organising relief efforts and I will be lending my support. I also intend to contribute by raising the issue in Parliament and bringing a wider focus to this disaster.

"My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of Serbia and the region during this very difficult time", Mr Hayes said.
