Fowler MP initiates domestic violence conversation

November 15, 2013

Chris Hayes MP, Federal Member for Fowler, has submitted a Private Member’s Notice of Motion in Parliament to draw attention to the prevalent issue of domestic violence in Australia.

The motion is inspired by the upcoming White Ribbon Day on the 25th of November, a day dedicated to raising awareness off and fighting domestic violence.

"I have been a White Ribbon Ambassador for a number of years and strongly believe that domestic violence is not an issue we can afford to remain silent on".

"It remains a sad and frightening reality that one in three women in our country will become victims of violence in their lifetime while one in five will be a victim of sexual violence with majority of incidents occurring at home", Mr Hayes said.

"Besides the social, the economic cost of violence to our community is astronomical, estimated at nearly $15 billion a year", Mr Hayes said.

The motion also calls on all Australian men to swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.

It is listed for debate in the Federal Parliament on Monday the 18th of November.
