Fowler pensioners to receive increase on 20 September

September 17, 2010

Around 23,500 pensioners in Fowler will receive an increase in their pensions from 20 September 2010, due to indexation.

Chris Hayes MP, Federal Member for Fowler, said pension payments would increase by $15.00 per fortnight for singles on the maximum rate, and $22.60 per fortnight for couples combined on the maximum rate.

Following these increases, total pension payments for those on the maximum rate, including the base rate and pension supplement, will be:

  • $716.10 per fortnight for singles; and
  • $1079.60 per fortnight for couples combined.

“I understand the pressure that the cost of living has on local families and pensioners and I know that this increase in the pension will be a welcome relief for many people in Fowler,” Mr Hayes said.

“It is very rewarding to see the benefits of Federal Labor’s reforms to the pension system make a real difference to local residents.”

As a result of Federal Labor’s historic reforms in September last year and higher indexation this year, pensioners in Fowler have received increases of around $115 per fortnight for singles and $97 per fortnight for couples combined in pension payments

Background information on the pension increases:

Pensions are indexed twice a year to the highest increase of three measures: the consumer price index, the pensioner and beneficiary living cost index, and growth in male total average weekly earnings.

The September 2010 pension rise was driven by movement in the pensioner and beneficiary living cost index in the six months to June 2010.

People eligible for the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension (adult rate), Carer Payment, veteran income support payments, Wife Pension, Widow B Pension and Bereavement Allowance will all benefit from the increases.
