Local MP visits Serbia

May 01, 2013

Chris Hayes MP, Federal Member for Fowler, visited the Republic of Serbia earlier this year.

He was accompanied by other MPs; Mr Steve Georganas from South Australia and Mr Luke Simpkins from Western Australia as well as Senator for Victoria Helen Kroger.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the economic, political and cultural cooperation between Australia and Serbia.

Mr Hayes returned with a positive impression of Serbia and a belief that the two nations can continue to strengthen their relations.

"Australian Parliamentary Delegation’s visit to Serbia was most productive as we met senior members of the Serbian Parliament as well as representatives form various Department and organisations who are working on fostering Serbia’s trade".

"This visit represents a significant step forward in the relations between Australia and the Republic of Serbia. I trust that we can work together in further developing and strengthening this positive relationship", Mr Hayes said.

Upon returning to Australia Mr Hayes spoke in the Federal Parliament of the visit and expressed his gratitude to the former Ambassador Neda Maletic for her hard work in ensuring the visit was a success.

"In addition to the meetings designed to further our political and economic cooperation, our working trip to Serbia included visits to a number of culturally and historically significant sites".

"This gave our delegation a great insight into the richness and diversity of Serbia’s history and culture", Mr Hayes added.
