O’Farrell Government unclear on M5 tolling extension

April 08, 2014

Chris Hayes MP, Federal Member for Fowler, expressed his grave concern at the O’Farrell Government’s refusal to rule out extending the M5 West tolling to fund the construction of the WestConnext roadway.

The State Government is considering selling the right to toll the M5 West beyond the current 2026 deadline to help fund the growing backlog in infrastructure funding.

"Residents of Liverpool and Western Sydney at large should not be expected to pay for infrastructure promises the O’Farrell Government is unable to keep especially when it comes to roads they won’t be using."

"These road links will be essential for the operation of the proposed Badgerys Creek Airport and therefore should be subjected to specific infrastructure funding and not a toll on western Sydney residents", Mr Hayes said.

"Both State and Federal Liberal Governments are not being clear about the source of funding for the WestConnex and other infrastructure surrounding the proposed new airport."

"Residents of Western Sydney should not have to pay for Government’s lack of planning when it comes to infrastructure funding in Sydney’s road network."

"Western Sydney residents deserve better", Mr Hayes added.
