As a Federal Member of Parliament, I have the honour of representing the most multicultural electorate in Australia and I am constantly thrilled and amazed at the vibrancy of our community.
I attend many multicultural events and festivities throughout the year and recently I was privileged to attend the many Lunar New Year festivities that were held.
This year is the Year of the Pig. The Pig is traditionally associated with luck, good fortune and prosperity and in my case, no doubt something to do with a healthy appetite and a reasonable love of food!
On the eve of Lunar New Year, I had the pleasure of joining hundreds of Vietnamese families in the midnight celebrations at the Phuoc Hue Temple in Wetherill Park, to welcome the Lunar New Year or Tet.
I also joined in with the many Chinese families at the Mingyue Lay Temple as well as visiting another eight Vietnamese and Chinese temples in my electorate.
The annual Vietnamese Tet Festival at Fairfield Showground is another highlight of Lunar New Year. It is one of the most popular festivals in the multicultural calendar and it is attended by over 40,000 people.
The Lunar New Year is one of the most important cultural events celebrated in my electorate of Fowler.
It is a time to spend with family and friends, a time of personal reflection and a time in which the community takes a moment to remember and pay respect to ancestors.
The lion dancing, traditional costumes, the fantastic cuisine, the fireworks and carnival atmosphere, all came together to make the 2019 celebrations truly memorable.
Tet or Lunar New Year is also a time for all Australians to celebrate the success of our multicultural society and the exceptional contributions that our Chinese and Vietnamese communities have made to our great nation.
I feel privileged to be part of this colourful, vibrant, diverse community and wish the Vietnamese and Chinese Australians a harmonious and prosperous Year of the Pig.
